Move over Niagara and Pelee Island.
A South Bruce couple is hoping to add Carrick Township to the list of Ontario’s wine-producing areas.
South Bruce Council has also passed a motion in support of Gary and Diane Fischer’s plan to start growing grapes and producing wine on their property.
The growing conditions in the area are said to be good for grapes, and Councillor Les Nichols says it’s good to see a local tourist-focused business starting up.
He says Gary Fischer is the kind of person who can make it work too.
Nichols says the wine will be unique and the more tourism and business South Bruce can attract, the better.
The Fischer’s are also seeking approval from neighbouring property owners as they make their case to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission for a winery licence.
The Ontario Viniculture Association is the umbrella group for Ontario wineries.
It’s website confirms Carrick Wines plans to open soon.
