The Ontario government has offered a financial beacon to Bruce County’s historic lighthouses.
Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell was at the Bruce County Museum in Southampton on Friday.
She announced over 67 thousand dollars from the Rural Economic Development program will got towards promoting the lighthouses and upgrading some of them.
The money is being looked after by the museum and the Bruce Coast Lighthouse Partners.
Partners Past Chair and Southampton Propeller Club President Gordon Webb says with Bruce County’s designation as the number one place in Canada to see lighthouses, there’s always room to enhance things further.
He says they plan to put in new walkways and improve the lightkeepers house on Chantry Island, and add new signage to the tour base at the mouth of the Saugeen River.
Other plans include renovating the Cabot Head fog horn building and refurbishing the museum on Flowerpot Island.
The funding will also be used to commemorate the 150th anniversaries of the Point Clark and Chantry Island lighthouses.
MPP Carol Mitchell says the funding will increase the ability of the lighthouses to improve safety standards and be respectful of our heritage.
