The Mayor of South Bruce Peninsula has agreed to give up a couple of the perks that come with the job.
Gwen Gilbert is giving up her Blackberry and office space at town hall.
This after council earlier this week told her to after she would not disclose details of a discussion she had in August with Municipal Affairs Minister Jim Watson.
Gilbert says all contact with her will now be through her home phone number which she released to the public — 519-379-3067 — or through the Clerk’s office at the town hall.
She hopes her decision will restore openness and productivity to council.
Gilbert says good things are happening in the municipality, including projects coming forth.
Councillor Dan Kerr introduced the motion earlier this week to have the Mayor give up the office space and the Blackberry.
He says the Mayor is showing a more concliatory tone after earlier saying council could not take perks of the office away.
Kerr says council has issues with how the Mayor does business, and she needs to earn councils respect by building consensus and being a leader.
If Gilbert had not given up the Blackberry and office, she was going to have the courts declare Kerr’s resolution null and void.
She says doing that would not have accomplished anything.
councillor Betty Hall says the Mayor still needs to reveal the details of the meeting with Watson.
She says ratepayers foot the bill for the meeting between Gilbert and the Minister, so they should have a right to know.
