I really, really want to do a piece on a fabulous trip the SMHLPA took to see NHL games at Chicago & Detroit last weekend,…….
But first, I want to tell you about going to Port Elgin Tuesday afternoon for the CWOSSA Football Championship game.
On a great November afternoon, the John F. Ross Royals of Guelph scored a tight 7-4 win over the Bluewater Champion Saugeen District Royals in a game that was almost as terrific as the weather conditions.
The low score would suggest it was a defensive game with little offence, but that wasn’t the case whatsoever.
Both teams had extended drives, in fact, the game winning touchdown came in the last minute of play on a 75 yard march that took just 44 seconds of clock time to climax with a sharp pass from Alec Wilson to Jake Firmeth to erase a 4-0 Saugeen District lead.
The Bluewater Royals had their moments too, especially on the ground, but they couldn’t punch it in and saw their hopes dashed on a desperation bomb as time expired.
Was it textbook football ?
Not really, but that too was the charm; that’s high school football.
A botched snap led to an amazing punt by John F. Ross, and a quadruple fumble with both teams having momentary possession led to a 35 yard Saugeen gain.
Obviously, with Saugeen District losing at home, not everybody was happy with the result, but the game itself was pretty good.
