It looks like municipal workers in Brockton won’t be getting a raise next year.
Mayor Charlie Bagnato says council wants to implement a salary freeze.
He says considering the economic times, they don’t feel it’s right to hand out the three per cent raise seen in years past.
Bagnato says the municipality usually matches any increase in the national cost of living.
However, the CPI — the consumer price index — actually went down 1.9 per cent.
Bagnato says they don’t want to hit municipal staff with a pay cut so instead are aiming for a salary freeze.
Bagnato says they’re sending a message to union leaders with the call for a zero per cent pay increase.
However, he acknowledges that if unionized staff get a raise, the issue will have to come back before council for reevaluation.
