Wiarton welcomes a new doctor today.
As Bayshore Broadcasting News Reporter Peggy O’Neill tells us Doctor Nelvia Van Dorp will join the Wiarton Hospital.
Doctor Van Dorp will begin practicing in the hospital ER today.
Mayor Gwen Gilbert says Doctor Van Dorp will take the next two months to set up her office while working in emerge.
Gilbert says in January 2010 she will be taking on new patients slowly in the building beside the Wiarton hospital.
There are no dates yet as to when her patient sign up will be.
Doctor Van Dorp completed her undergrad at Trinity Western University in BC and has studied medicine at the University of Western Ontario in London.
Before moving to Wiarton Doctor Van Dorp was practicing medicine in Northern Ontario.
Nelvia is the daughter of Doctor John Van Dorp, Chief of Staff in Wiarton.
Councillor and member of the Doctor Recruitment Committee Dan Kerr says recruiting Doctor Van Dorp was a community effort.
Kerr says Doctor Dianne Haak contacted Van Dorp initially and asked her to consider moving to the Bruce Peninsula.
Doctor Haak closed her practice in Wiarton in May and since then the emergency room has been left with only four full-time doctors.
