Friday was a groundbreaking day in Walkerton.
A crowd gathered to watch officials turn the sod for the new two million dollar addition to the South Bruce-Grey Health Centre’s Walkerton site that will also be the new home of the Brockton and Area Family Health Team.
South Bruce-Grey Board Vice Chair, and Family Health Team Past President Roy Mullen says the event was two and half years in the making.
He says it was at that time the recruitment committee suggested a new medical clinic and Family Health Team were needed in order to bring more doctors to town.
Mullen says the construction machinery is already at the site to start work on the new addition, which will include an expanded family birthing centre, where nearly 300 babies a year are born.
South Bruce-Grey Health Centre CEO Paul Davies says they will also be able to expand the Women’s Health Program, make the hospital more accessible to the disabled, and provide high tech meeting rooms for staff and other groups.
Hospital and Family Health Team officials hope to have the new addition completed by mid-September of 2010.
