A man is using the fire at Chapman’s Ice Cream in Markdale to run a scam.
Grey County OPP are warning merchants about a suspect who is trying to cash cheques at local stores, claiming his identification was lost in the fire.
Police say the suspect went to the Markdale Foodland store in September and asked management if he could pay for his groceries by cheque until his wallet and contents could be replaced.
He returned three more times indicating management had already approved his cheques.
But they were returned NSF and a letter to the address on the cheques was returned to sender.
The suspect is described as a thin male with curly brown hair — believed to be in his late 30’s — and he was with a woman.
Police say they could also be driving a Dodge Dakota pickup truck.
