One day ahead of Remembrance Day, Toronto’s Island Airport has been renamed after Canada’s most famous First World War flying ace.
The Toronto Star reports that effective immediately — the airport will be known as the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.
The Owen Sound native was credited with 72 victories in the skies over Europe during the war.
He received the highest British military honour, the Victoria Cross, after a 1917 solo attack on a German base.
But the renaming caused a stir in Owen Sound since the City’s airport is also named after Billy Bishop.
Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners was concerned people would confuse the two airports.
But the Billy Bishop Museum Board in Owen Sound thought the move in Toronto would help promote the boyhood home in the Scenic City.
