A funeral for former MP Gus Mitges will be held at 11 AM today at St. George’s Anglican Church in Owen Sound.
Hundreds of people lined up for the visitation of Doctor Gus Mitges in Owen Sound yesterday — fondly looking back at the life of the local politician.
Mitges — who died Sunday at the age of 90 — is remembered as a man of the people who just wanted to be one of the guys.
Prime Minister Harper issued a statement about Mitges, saying he was saddened to learn of the former MP’s death.
Harper says ‘Gus’ dedication to his community will always be remembered.’
Doctor Mitges was a veterinarian, school board member and President of the Owen Sound Little Theatre before being elected as a City alderman in 1966.
He was then elected as MP and served as the Conservative member representing Grey Simcoe and Bruce Grey for the next 20 years before retiring in 1993.
Mitges also received one of Greece’s top civilian awards in 1995 when he was made a Commander of the Order of Phoenix for his work as president of the Greece Parliamentary Association.
