Students at Hanover Heights school have learned an important lesson in exercising their civic rights.
Hanover has re-installed stop signs at the 13th Street and 15th Avenue intersection across from the Hanover Heights School yard.
And it’s due to the work of a 7 year old boy and his 350 name petition.
The signs were originally removed following the construction of the new school requiring students to use a 4 way stop pedestrian crossing at 13th Street and 13th Avenue.
However Mayor Kathi Maskell says not all the children were using the new cross walk.
Many of the youth were still crossing at the intersection where stop signs had been removed in order to get right onto the playground.
This intersection used to be in front of the old James A Magee School which was demolition and replaced with Hanover Heights School.
The 350 name petition called for the reinstatement of the stop signs and it was filled with the signatures of students, staff and parents.
Maskell is very proud of the seven year old boy who started it all.
