No line ups at today’s flu clinic at the Health Unit building in Owen Sound or the Family Health Team office.
However, it’s been a very busy week at area hospitals.
Emergency room visits at all Grey Bruce Health Service sites are up dramatically as a result of people coming down or thinking they have the H1N1 flu.
President and CEO Maureen Solecki says normally at this time of year, about 20 per cent of people attending the ER have respiratory problems associated with a flu virus
However she says they now are seeing about 60 per cent of patients with respiratory problems with respiratory complaints.
She says emergency room staff appear to be coping well with the increased volume of patients and they are constantly monitoring the ER departments to make sure there are enough staff on hand to deal with the increased number of patients.
Solecki says she is also pleased that the Health Unit has managed to acquire an additional one thousand doses of the H1N1 vaccine for hospital workers to they can vaccinate as many staff members as possible.
Jo Ann McConnell is the Infection Control Coordinator at the hospital.
She says they have installed hand sanitizers is just about every location in the hospital, including in patients rooms to try and stop the spread of the flu.
She says in addition there are signs up telling visitors that if they have any type of cough, then they must wear a face mask if they want to visit any patient in the hospital.
McConnell says the only visitor restrictions in place at the hospital are in the women and child unit as pregnant women and young children are at a greater risk from H1N1.
