Saugeen Shores is on the world stage when it comes to dealing with nuclear waste.
Mayor Mike Smith recently attended a conference in England where representatives from several countries discussed the issue.
Smith says he gave the stakeholder’s perspective from municipalities neighbouring nuclear waste facilities — with emphasis on the current planning process for the new Deep Geological Repository at the Bruce Power site.
He says discussions included the community view of nuclear waste, locating disposal facilities, and maintaining them.
Smith says England, Sweden and Spain are all dealing with the same challenges and topics that are being experienced locally.
He says those challenges include being fair to stakeholders and ensuring all members of the community are properly engaged.
