Ghosts and goblins will be out in full force this Hallowe’en and the last thing on their mind will be safety.
In the scramble to collect as many treats as possible, the youngsters often forget the rules of the road and dash back and forth across streets without looking out for vehicles.
Owen Sound Fire Prevention Officer Greg Nicol says its important for parents to reinforce some basic safety rules with the little and not so little ones before they go trick or treating.
He says parents should ensure that costumes are bright and reflective and accompany children when they go trick-or-treating.
Make sure everyone knows the 911 emergency number.
Nicol also says a lot of people use candles on Hallowe’en and they should be very cautious when using them.
He says battery operated candles and flashing lights are the safest.
If you must use real candles, keep them safely out of reach of children and pets and away from anything that can burn.
Nicol says candles should never be left unattended.
He says with the clocks being turned back on Saturday night, this is a perfect time to also check smoke detectors and change the batteries.
Nicol says only working smoke alarms can detect fire in its early stages and it is important to talk to everyone in your home about what to do when the smoke alarms sounds.
