Another major boost for doctor recruitment in Saugeen Shores.
The Society of Energy Professionals — one of the employee organizations at Bruce Power — has purchased a three bedroom condominium on Morpeth Street in Southampton for doctors to use on a temporary basis.
The Society will lease the condo back to the town, for likely just a dollar a year. The town will cover all of the utility bills.
The locum house is meant to help attract doctors who will work shifts at Saugeen Memorial Hospital.
Mayor Mike Smith says the Society has wanted to help out for a while, and a ribbon cutting will be held to give them the recognition they deserve.
Meanwhile, Saugeen Shores’ existing locum house on Grey Street in Southampton will soon fall to the wrecking ball.
The house has fallen into serious disrepair and Smith says it is no longer worth fixing.
He says it’s a valuable piece of property near the hospital and he’d like to see the community hang onto it.
An engineering assessment for dangerous building materials like asbestos will be done before the house is torn down.
Councillor Fred Schildroth questions why the municipality has to have the assessment done when it isn’t the normal practice for demolition on private property.
