It’s time to concentrate only on your driving.
Ontario’s ban on motorists using hand held electronic devices is now in effect, although officials say there will be a three-month warning period.
Saugeen Shores Police Chief Dan Rivett says studies show that you are four times more likely to get into a crash of some sort if you’re using some sort of electronic device such as a cell phone or Blackberry.
Rivett says that alone should have people on the side of the law but he’s found that factions are polarized over the legislation.
He says there are those who welcome the law but others who want the government out of private vehicles of constituents.
Rivett says another distraction to drivers is the GPS unit.
He says the GPS can be programmed before you begin driving with only the occasional buttom being pressed after that.
Rivett says the next three months can be considered a warning period, however each time a motorist is warned, the occurrence is logged.
If police find a trend with one motorist, you can bet that person will be ticketed long before the three months is up.
Fines will likely start around 110 dollars and go up to 500 dollars.
