A meeting is planned for today at Peninsula Shores District School in Wiarton on the issue of pro-life protest that was squelched.
Student Jennifer Rankin wanted to conduct a silent protest on Tuesday for with red tape over her mouth and the word “life” printed on it.
She wanted to go to class and if a teacher asked questions, she would peel the tape back, answer the question and re-tape her mouth.
Instead, Principal Pat Cavan met her at the door and told her the plan would disrupt the school.
After a meeting with Rankin’s mother they agreed on a compromise.
Jennifer Rankin spent the day in an office at the school and wasn’t allowed to meet with other students.
Today, a meeting is being held to discuss whether a debate can be organized on the pro-life vs abortion issue.
Principal Cavan says rather than demonstrating, she would like to see an exchange of ideas at the school.
Cavan says one-sided protests are simply not allowed on school property.
Jennifer Rankin says it’s ironic the school tells students to think for themselves and express themselves, why couldn’t her silent protest go ahead.
She also finds it ironic her silent protest was hidden, but the school told students today about a day long, school wide silent protest on November 20th in support of “Free the children.”
