Expansion plans for the Hanover Walkerton Landfill site are not going as quickly as Hanover had hoped.
A delay by Brockton to pass a zoning amendment for the new landfill site has Hanover worried.
Mayor Kathi Maskell says time is running out before the Hanover and Walkerton Landfill site reaches is maximum capacity.
That is expected to happen in either late 2010 or early 2011.
Maskell says if the proposed landfill expansion has not taken place by then, the Ministry of Environment has said the municipalities will have to ship their garbage out of town.
Brockton deferred approval of the zone change in July, after Marl Lake residents objected to mapping that shows the landfill area stretching toward their homes and the lake.
But Maskell argues that would not happen — she notes only 10 acres is designated for the landfill and the rest of the land is open space.
Maskell hopes Brockton will get around to passing the zoning amendment soon.
Once the zoning amendment is complete the public comment process can begin, including any complaints filed to the Ontario Municipal Board.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment is currently reviewing the environmental assessment for the proposed the six million dollar landfill expansion project.
The review is expected to wrap up in February or March.
