Some changes to the way residents in South Bruce Peninsula will be taking out their garbage.
Council passed a new garbage collection by law by a vote of 8-1 at Tuesday night’s meeting.
The change includes one free bag with a maximum of three bags for every household — and the other bags will require $1.50 bag tags.
Another component of the by law states if recyclables are found in garbage bags one notice will be given and if it continues garbage at that house will not be picked up.
A maximum fine of five thousand dollars can also be issued for garbage dumped on the side of the road.
Waste Management Committee Member and Councillor Dan Kerr says they have spent two years researching best methods of other municipalities and and they have made several compromises.
Kerr says the committee wanted to implement clear bags as well – but that was not included in the final by law.
He says they made real progress and he is pleased with the councils decision.
Kerr says the town has the absolute worst diversion rate at only 21 per cent and he hopes this will get some recycling out of the landfill.
There still seems to be tension amongst council members as Councillor Ana Vukovic requested that Mayor Gwen Gilbert read all 23 pages of the new by-law.
Mayor Gilbert spent about 30 minutes reading half of the by law before the request was withdrawn.
A date will be set for when the change will take effect at the next committee of the whole meeting.
