Staff at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton are trying to plan their major exhibits — as far into the future as 2015.
Director Barbara Ribey says they’re about to enter in agreement with Texas-based Wonderworks for the third exhibit from that company, which will be featured in 2010.
She says it builds on the success of the Ice Age Mammals and Dinosaurs Invade Bruce County exhibits and is Ancient Monsters of the Sea.
Six robotic models of ancient sea creatures will be featured.
Ribey says it ties in with the museum’s geology and the crustaceous and devonian periods, and also compliments an exhibit on dragons that will be featured at Grey Roots near Owen Sound.
The museum plans to mark the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 in 2012.
Ribey says they’re starting a campaign to raise funds for an exhibit on the General Hunter, a Royal Navy vessel seized by the US during the war that was eventually put to commercial use.
It sank off of Southampton and remains buried in the beach there.
Ribey says there are a number of artifacts from the ship being preserved at the Canadian Conservation Institute in Ottawa, and she’d like to have them as part of the display.
Ribey says they’re hoping to start the campaign as soon as possible and meet with local marine heritage groups to get help with the exhibit plan.
