The goal is set — and the need is huge.
The United Way of Bruce Grey’s annual campaign target has been set at 350 thousand dollars — which is ten thousand dollars more than the total amount reached last year.
Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn says the need for donations is strong – as many people in the area feel the effect of the recession.
Dobbyn says there was a strong need felt for the backpack campaign in the area — up 500 recipients from last year to an astounding 17-hundred children.
She adds there is already a waiting list for people needing help with winter heating bills.
Other agencies like shelters and food banks are seeing an increase in need as well.
Dobbyn says even with the recession – the United Way should be able to meet their target with aggressive campaign donations from the banks – Bruce Power – the LCBO and other community groups.
But individual donations are always welcomed – and Dobbyn adds every little bit helps.
Donations can be made at the Owen Sound office or any business displaying the United Way logo – has a campaign going on you can donate to.
Dobbyn says another feather in their hat this year is honorary chair Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners.
Dobbyn hopes that with the Mayor’s involvement she can vouch for the United way – saying they make a difference in the community.
She hopes with Lovell Stanners involvement – council will think twice before setting fees that may effect the areas most vulnerable – those living in poverty.
Dobbyn says donations will be taken until November 30th.
