An Owen Sound native has been honoured as part of the Homecoming festivities at the University of Western Ontario in London.
Nancy O’Shea was one of four recipients this year of the Elfrida Berzins Award — presented annually by the universitys Womens Athletic Alumni.
It’s the equivalent of a Hall of Fame induction.
The former Nancy Lemon played basketball for five years at Western, where she was a team captain and earned four provincial all-star selections at centre.
She was chosen the school’s top female athlete in 1984, the same year she graduated with a bachelor of arts degree.
She also received a bachelor of education degree from Western one year later.
O’Shea and three others were honoured at an Alumni Awards Dinner last night at the Western campus.
Also a graduate of OSCVI — O’Shea is a daughter of Marie and the late Cy Lemon.
Her father is a member of the Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame.
This will be a busy weekend for O’Shea, who will leave with her London club team in a couple of days for the World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia.
The team is undefeated in provincial age-group play since 1997, and is looking to improve on the bronze medal it won at the last World Masters Games four years ago in Edmonton.
Its the continuation of O’Sheas lifelong involvement in basketball, as is her coaching of high school hoops at Strathroy District Collegiate Institute.
She has taught for 25 years at SDCI and is the head of the Health and Physical Education department.
