They’re big, they’re orange, and Port Elgin will be celebrating them next weekend.
It’s the town’s annual Pumpkinfest.
Coordinator Lisa Irwin says all of the usual events will be back this year — including the giant pumpkin weigh-off, massive car show, and straw bale maze.
She says a lot of new things are in store, like a recreation show with exhibits and guest speakers, along with a drive-in movie featuring silver screen gems Grease and Madagascar.
Irwin says the new events are possible because of a provincial Celebrate Ontario grant.
She says Ronald McDonald will be at Pumpkinfest to do crafts with the kids, there will be a video game area, and the Toronto Maple Leafs off-ice hockey tour is back again this year.
Other highlights include pumpkin seed spitting contests and awards for the giant pumpkins.
Growers from all over North America bring their pumpkins to Port Elgin, hoping to earn the distinction of having the largest in the world.
