Huron Kinloss Council has deferred any decision on the Bruce Beach Association’s proposal to clear a 20 foot wide section of vegetation from the beach.
Councillors Anne Eadie and Don Murray both say more information is needed.
Not all Bruce Beach property owners support the idea of removing the vegetation.
Tom Karrow favours letting nature take its course and says there is no doubt that vegetation reduces erosion along the shore and reduces runoff of nutrients into the water.
However, Bruce Beach Association President Keith MacDonald says over the last three years, nature taking its course has been a problem, and there are many non-native plants that weren’t there before.
He wants to see the beach be easily accessible for people to use it.
Mayor Mitch Twolan says it’s only fair that council has time to read through the dozens of emails the township has received on the issue, and adds they want time to meet with a Ministry of Natural Resources botanist to discuss what plant life is exactly growing in the beach area.
The Ministry has not yet made any decision to allow the vegetation removal to take place.
