A couple of new private housing developments in Bruce County are being recommended to receive support from Ontario’s Affordable Housing Program.
One is developer David Brown’s project in Ripley and the other is Jay Kirkland’s project in Wiarton.
The Ripley development is targeting all types of would-be homeowners and the funding request is for over 1.4 million dollars.
The Wiarton project is targeted towards senior citizens and the request is for 1.8 million.
Bruce County Director of Social Services Terry Sanderson says the province provides the money for up to 120 thousand dollars per unit.
He says the fund is geared to housing for seniors and the disabled, but any developer wanting to build affordable housing could apply to the county.
Then the County will forward the applications to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing to make decisions on funding.
Sanderson says the two developments being recommended for support in Bruce County meet their expectations.
He says the main issue is that the projects must be “shovel ready,” and be ready to start construction within three months.
Sanderson says all factors like zoning and building permits already have to be taken care of when the applications are made.
The zoning changes have already been made for the Ripley project, and building permits are currently being applied for.
Construction is ready to start on the Wiarton development, and a building permit will be issued by September 28th.
