Another rabid animal has been found in the region.
This time — the Grey Bruce Health Unit says test results confirm rabies in a skunk found in Southgate.
Officials say one person was exposed to the skunk northeast of Mount Forest and they have started preventative treatment against rabies.
This is the 8th rabid animal reported in Grey Bruce this year — including 4 other rabid skunks, one bat and two foxes.
The Health Unit reminds pet owners that all cats and dogs over three months must be vaccinated for rabies.
All riding horses must also be vaccinated.
If you are bitten by an animal — immediately wash and flush the wound with soap and water.
It is the most effective procedure in the prevention of rabies.
Your should also seek medical attention.
If your pet is bitten — the public health unit keeps it for 10 days to rule out rabies.
Rabies is fatal to animals and without the timely administration of treatment will cause death in humans.
