The controversial Site 41 landfill in Simcoe County is in the trashbin.
This morning Mayors and Deputy Mayors at County Council voted overwhelmingly in favour of a motion to permanently end construction at the site.
The move came after the councillors voted last month to suspend construction on the site for one year.
The vote was reportedly nearly unanimous with only three votes against the proposal — those from the mayor and deputy mayor of Bradford West Gwillimbury and the mayor of Severn Township.
Simcoe County Warden Tony Guergis says Site 41 has overshadowed other important issues, and it’s time to move forward and refocus.
He adds Simcoe County has to come up with a forward looking waste management strategy for the area.
The landfill issue resulted in several weeks of protest by residents in the area.
Council of Canadians Chair Maude Barlow says this is a big victory after a 26 year struggle.
She says they will monitor the situation to make sure the land isn’t sold to a private developer, however, as the certificate of approval for the site wasn’t revoked.
The site was to have held trash generated in Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny and Tay Townships.
There are still questions about what will happen to that garbage, which is currently being dumped at landfills in Clearview and Collingwood.
