August building permit statistics for Huron-Kinloss are a sign that the worst of the recession could be over.
15 permits were issued during the month with a construction value of over 2.2 million dollars, ove. 1.6 of which was for new residential building.
So far, 110 permits have been issued this year, down only slightly from 123 for the same period in 2008.
The total value of construction so far is over 11.4 million dollars, up from 11.3 last year.
Chief Building Official Matt Farrell says those numbers are even better than last year, which started off well but then declined along with the economy.
He says this year, things started off slow, and now they seem to be picking up.
Farrell says compared to many municipalities, Huron-Kinloss is going against the trend, and believes figures are less positive in municipalities in other areas.
He says some people don’t seem to be feeling the hit from the current economic troubles and are taking advantage of lower prices for building materials.
