There’s a flurry of paving to be done in Owen Sound over the next while.
The City is trying to cram three years worth of road resurfacing projects into less than two months time.
The city was recently informed that it will receive a 627 thousand dollar grant from the Community Adjustment Fund.
It’s a federal program which was started this summer to help communities that have suffered setbacks because of the recession.
That money is being combined with 250 thousand dollars already set aside in the city’s budget for asphalt resurfacing.
11 paving projects had already been approved for this year, with 29 others put off until 2010 and 2011 due to the limited funds available.
Those projects will all now come forward and be done this year.
There are two catches, though.
First, the projects must be completed by March 31st, 2010 in order to qualify for Community Adjustment Fund money.
Second, it’s not likely the necessary work can be done once the weather turns cold for good.
That means an even tighter deadline than what has already been mandated by the federal government.
Luckily, E.C. King Contracting has pledged to the city it can do the work by the end of October — less than seven weeks from now.
The 40 paving projects are spread over the entire city and will cost over 920 thousand dollars.
