A gas station in Collingwood has been destroyed after an overnight fire.
It started around 11:30 PM Monday at the gas station on Hume Street and Paterson Streets.
Fire Chief Trent Elyea says it took them until 4:30 AM Tuesday to put out the blaze.
He says the damage is at least 500 thousand dollars, and the Ontario Fire Marshall is on scene trying to figure out what caused the fire.
Elyea says the fire got into the roof of the building, which made it tricky because there were numerous roof layers from previous renovations.
He says the first layer had a steel bottom, which means they couldn’t fight the fire from the inside.
That meant they had to get onto the roof, but by that time Elyea says the fire was coming through the top of the roof.
He says that they lost the one business, but managed to save the surrounding businesses.
Elyea credits the firewall in between the stores, and says it kept the fire inside the gas station.
There were no injuries in the fire.
