After being closed for almost a year, work on the Bognor Bridge is now speeding along.
The tender for the final phase of the project was just opened on Thursday – and Meaford Council has quickly awarded it to the lowest bidder.
Director of Operations Steve Vokes says the tender for the bridge replacement has been awarded to Premier Concrete Inc. for 845-thousand dollars.
Vokes says this phase of the project includes construction of the bridge approaches, abutments, deck, railings, and sidewalks.
During the first phase, a separate contract was awarded to remove the 85-year old span over Walter’s Creek.
Vokes says construction will begin this week and the contract with Premier outlines a December 18th end date.
However, he says the final topcoat of asphalt and some restoration details will have to wait until the spring.
Vokes also says the project is coming in under budget.
He says the engineering budget has always been for approximately 1.2 million dollars.
But with this latest tender, plus the removal tender and engineering work, the total now is just over one million dollars at $1,017,133.
The Bognor Bridge was deemed unsafe last October and closed to traffic.
