Wiarton is famous for Willie – but they also host a fall fair that features some great family activities.
Vice President Wiarton and District Ag Society Ruth Ann Snelling says the 141st edition of the fair starts tonight and feature competitions that make their fair stand out from the crowd.
Friday night there are the farmer Olympics where area farmers compete in matches of hay bale throwing – nail driving and more.
30 to 40 men and women compete in this event.
There is also the “chip flip” on Friday night when – with a catapult – cow patties are flipped across a field to see who “flips” the furthest.
Snelling says this years theme is “Something to crow about” and Saturday features an actual crowing competition.
Snelling also says the baby contest on Saturday features a “chip off the old block” segment where any babies that look like a relative are judged.
Saturday also features alot of agriculture events such as a junior farmers Olympics competition for youngsters.
Snelling says the parade just before noon is also a popular event.
There is also dairy and beef and sheep shows throughout the day – as well as a heavy horse pull.
Snelling says popularity for the home crafts and baking exhibits continues and will be showcased on Saturday.
There is also a food booth on the grounds with something for everyone.
Friday night runs from 7 PM until 10:30 PM and Saturday from 9 AM until 4:30 at the Wiarton Fairgrounds.
Admission is $5 for one day – $8 for both days – children under 12 are free.
