R. J. Ross of Port Elgin recently competed in the World Police and Fire Games in Vancouver.
The athlete entered six different events last month and hit the podium five of six times, including the gold for winning the triathlon championship, beating out 300 other competitors.
Ross says he’s not finished yet.
The member of the Bruce Power Emergency Services fire department says he wants to be the best he can at the sport over the next six or seven years.
Ross says the triathlon is the hardest sport he’s ever done.
His plans for next year include entering what is called a “half iron man” triathlon which consists of a 2.5 kilometer swim, a 90K bike ride followed by a 21 kilometer run.
Ross says he’s also looking to represent Canada at the World triathlon championships in Hungary, next August.
In the meantime, Ross says he’s in his “off season,” so his hours of training are cut back to about nine hours a week.
