Test results confirm that a fox found in the Tara area was rabid.
The Grey Bruce health unit says this is the seventh rabid animal reported in Grey Bruce in 2009.
There have been four rabid skunks, one bat and one positive fox.
Last year, there were five rabid animal reports.
Officials say there was no human exposure in this latest incident.
Health unit officials remind residents… it is the law that all cats and dogs over three months, and all riding horses in Grey Bruce must be vaccinated for rabies.
If bitten by an animal, you should immediately wash and flush the wound with soap and water.
You should also seek medical attention.
For a biting incident involving a wild animal, the animals brain is sent for rabies testing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
If the animal dies of rabies, tests positive for rabies or cannot be located, then the person is started on a series of rabies vaccinations immediately.
Rabies is a deadly disease of the central nervous system that affects humans and other mammals.
