The Owen Sound Selects Midgets defended thier title at the North Western Rural Cup Fastball Challenge with a 11 to 10 slug fest with the Keady Jets in OwenSound at Duncan Mcclellan Park Sunday Night.
The Selects advanced to the finals with a 10 to 2 victory over the Saugeen Rezmen while the Keady Jets advanced with a 8 to 7 extra inning win over the Chatsworth Yellow Jackets.
Both teams were 5 and 0 going in to the Intermediate ‘D’ Championship game.
The final game saw the Tournament Most valuable Pitcher, Brett Miller of the Selects face off against the tournament’s Honorable Mention pitcher, Bev Underwood.
Miller entered the game with a 0.00 ERA and Underwood had just 4 runs against so far in the tournament before they both relinquished a slew of runs to the other teams offence.
Owen Sound scored the first run of the game in the first inning, only to have Keady get 3 runs of thier own in the 2nd inning.
Owen Sound than put up 4 runs in the 3rd inning, and 1 in the 4th inning.
Keady scored 1 in the 5th inning, Owen Sound scored twice more in the bottom half to go ahead 8 to 4.
Austin Brown and Lukas White hit homeruns to tie it up at 8 apeice in the 6th inning.
Owen sound scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning, but Keady got 2 more in the top of the 7th inning.
Nick Mccoy finished the 7th inning for the save as Miller was the eventual winner and Lukas White to0k the loss for the Jets.
Other award winners in the tournament were Adam Stuck of the Selects getting the tournament Most Valuable Player, Brett Hall of the Keady Jets getting the Most Outstanding Player, Markdale Raiders winning the Most Sportsmanlike Team,
Tyler Baumber of the Chatsworth Yellow Jackets winning the Most Sportsmanlike Player, Cody Skeleton of the Selects winning the the Best Offensive Player, and Taylor McConnell of the Selects winning the Best Defensive Player.
The Intermediate ‘D’ Bronze Medal game was won 10 to 3 by the Chatsworth Yellow Jackets over the Saugeen Rezmen.
Trevor Jones took the victory while Caleb Keeshig took the loss and Phil Ritchie closed things out for the Rezmen.
Matt Kuhl had 3 hits and Tyler Baumber had a double and a single to lead the Yellow Jackets offensive charge.
Rich Roote had 2 singles and Brad Ritchie smoked a double in the 5th inning to avoid the early mercy loss.
The Intermediate ‘E final was between 2 teams from the Highland Hills View Mens Fastball League as the Flesherton Auto Parts Plus Knights and the last years ‘E’ champions, the Dundalk Backline Bears did battle with Flesherton winning by a 9 to 5 final score.
Chris Goudie took the victory over Mike Dellabetta of the Bears.
Jason Pondewitz and Dwayne Bryan each had a double and a single to lead the way for the Kinghts, while Ryan Welsh and Adam Breadner each had a triple in the losing cause for the Bears.
