It’s the start of the long weekend, and the OPP say they are ready to make sure everyone gets thru it safely.
Western Region OPP Media Relations Officer Sergeant Dave Rektor says a year ago, there were no fatalities in the area between Tobermory and Windsor, and they want to repeat that this Labour Day holiday weekend.
Rektor says it has been a bad year on the waterways with several fatalities which he says could have been prevented if people simply wore life jackets.
The OPP plan to be out in full force thru the holiday weekend, targeting aggressive drivers — but also boaters who are not wearing their life jackets.
Rektor says they have had some success, reducing the carnage on the 400 series highways but one concern remains secondary roads.
The OPP he says will be monitoring the secondary highways for speeders and those who fail to stop at rural intersections.
Sergeant Rektor says there have been several fatal crashes where people end up being T-boned at an intersection when they failed to stop.
You may also notice more police presence around Wasaga Beach starting today.
Huronia West OPP will be keeping a watchful eye for aggressive and drunk drivers and will enforce their strict is fair policy.
Police say that means if you break the law, you will probably be charged.
OPP say stepped up police presence during the last long weekend of the summer plays a big part in preventing potentially life threatening situations.
Officers will be patrolling both area roads and waterways to also watch for speeders, people not wearing their seatbelts and boaters without proper marine safety equipment on board.
