West Grey council has agreed in principle to support the reconstruction of the Durham Activity Centre.
The non-profit health and fitness facility was destroyed by last months tornado.
Two members of its board of management approached West Grey council on Wednesday to seek moral support, if nothing else, for the centres re-establishment.
Board of Management spokesperson Tracy Detzler says the membership didnt necessarily want a financial commitment simply an assurance that the municipality values the activity centre and wants it back.
The activity centre was established in 1998 as a partnership with the town of Durham and has operated completely self-sufficiently since its establishment.
Members of council agreed the centre needs support to re-establish itself.
They did have questions about insurance and other issues, though, so council will revisit the issue again next Wednesday.
Councillor Bev Cutting said the potential exists for the new centre to be leaps and bounds better than the old one, which admittedly had space and accessibility limitations.
West Grey Deputy Mayor Dan Sullivan is also an activity centre board member.
He says the centre provides a tremendous service to the community and is already being missed.
