West Grey has asked the Ministry of Municipal Affairs to declare the entire municipality a disaster area.
Its a requirement in recovering from the tornado that tore through the municipality two weeks ago today.
Receiving the declaration from the ministry will make West Grey eligible for the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program.
Mayor Kevin Eccles says they decided it would be better to ask for a blanket declaration for the entire municipality rather than specific areas as there may be parts of the municipality where damage has yet to be assessed.
Its estimated the tornado caused at least 10 million dollars worth of damage in West Grey.
Local money raised for disaster relief would be matched two-to-one by the province.
Eccles hopes to have the declaration into the ministry within two weeks followed by the organization of a relief committee….working at arms length from council.
Ideally Eccles says, all claims would be processed within a year.
