The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is clearing up some rumours about air fresheners, after a fire in Lucknow destroyed a home.
Fire Protection Engineer Michael Ing says they’ve never issued any warnings about the possibility of a fire coming from a plug-in air freshener.
Ing says the rumours may stem from a company recall in 2002 over a product that was assembled improperly, and there was a potential fire hazard.
He says that was a specific recall and to his knowledge, no fires were actually the result of one of the plug-ins.
Ing says the rumours continued on the internet in 2003, and the myth was firmly debunked.
He says the Fire Marshal’s Office has never investigated any fires that were believed to be the result of an air freshener running low and catching fire.
