A Bruce County teenager received a conditional discharge, community service and a suspension after pleading guilty to assault in a hockey game.
The 17 year old — who can not be identified — pleaded guilty in Walkerton court yesterday.
The accused — who was 16 at the time — was charged after a 15 year old opponent was knocked unconscious with a cross-check to the back of the in a game last January in Southampton.
The game was between the midget level Arran Elderslie Ice Dogs and the Saugeen Shores Storm.
The incident happened during a line change and went unnoticed by referees and no penalty was called on the play.
The judge ruled in his decision that hitting from behind with a stick is not part of the game of hockey.
The 17 year old is also suspended from hockey until January 2010.
