The federal environmental assessment of Bruce Power’s proposed project for new nuclear reactors has been cancelled.
Environment Minister Jim Prentice says since the project itself has been scrapped by the Tiverton company, there’s no need for the environmental assessment.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission had requested the termination.
Transport Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada have also indicated they will not pursue the assessment as well.
Bruce Power’s original proposal called for the construction and operation of up to four nuclear reactors at the Tiverton site that would have generated some four thosuand megawatts of electricity.
Because of the economic times and the apparent cutback in electricity usage, it was decided to scrap new build plans and focus on the refurbishment of what they have at Bruce Power.
