Students aren’t the only ones that grace the hallways of schools in Bruce Grey.
Over the last school year — the Catholic School Board opened its doors to community groups more than 23 hundred times.
All of this was done at no cost to the user groups.
Superintendent of Business Cathy Colton says the School Board welcomes community use of its facilities.
She says the Catholic Board has opted not to charge a rental fee to these user groups because it is a good use of the schools during evening and summer hours.
Technically speaking the Board could charge a fee to any group that isn’t registered as a charity or not for profit group.
Colton says as long as it can — the School Board will continue to open its doors freely to the community.
She says this should be looked upon as public service not as revenue generating opportunity.
Surprisingly enough, Colton says the numbers are down this year compared to the previous year.
Last year the school board opened its schools 28 hundred times to small community groups.
Community use of schools covers a wide spectrum including recreational use such as volley ball teams to those who just need a space to meet in.
