As of September 1st — Hanover and Walkerton residents will now be able to discard their old tires at the landfill free of charge.
Its all part of the Ontario Tire Stewardship program which Hanover and Brockton have become a part of.
The full cost of the program will be funded within the tire industry.
The program allows tires to be picked up for free at the landfill while municipalities are provided with a Used Tire Collection Allowance.
Currently residents must pay 5 dollars per tire at the landfill.
Hanover Councilor Peter Hambly is very pleased with the Ontario Tire Stewardship program.
This aggressive scrap tire collection and recycling program is expected to divert 90 percent of scrap on road tires and 50 percent of scrap off road tires over the first five years of the program.
Hambly says new life will be breathed into the old tires as they are recycled into useful materials such as asphalt.
It’s hoped the new free tire disposal program will curb the illegal practice of dumping old tires on the side of the road.
