Brockton Mayor Charlie Bagnato wants to try politics on the federal level.
Bagnato announced at a Liberal riding meeting earlier this month in Blyth that he is entering the race to be the next federal Liberal candidate in the Huron-Bruce riding.
Bagnato has spent 9 years as a municipal politician in Brockton — 3 years as Councillor and 6 years as Mayor — and says he was first approached by the riding association to run for the vacant position.
He says when you first go into politics you want to make a positive difference and believes he has accomplished that.
He says he enjoys serving the public and wants to take that to the next step.
Bagnato says he is a champion in agriculture and manufacturing.
He says the manufacturing sector has been crippled by the slumping economy and would like to see a plan put together that produces obtainable results.
He says he has heard from pork producers that the aid provided by the Conservative government is not sufficient and believes more needs to be done.
Bagnato will be going up against Martin Bokhout (BOAK-out) — a Clinton doctor who finished third behind Greg McClinchey and Mark Kraemer for the nomination in 2007 — and Deb Homouth — who is a principal of an Internet school for dropouts.
McClinchey — who was the previous Huron-Bruce Liberal candidate and lost in the last federal election to Conservative Ben Lobb — is now working for York-West M-P Judy Sgro.
No date has been set for selecting a candidate but it is believed it would be held sometime in October.
