Several members of South Bruce Peninsula council are seething mad after learning they are under investigation by the Ontario Ombudsman’s office.
The issue came to a head in open council Tuesday night when Mayor Gwen Gilbert was questioned about whether she had called the Ombudsman in to investigate the workings of council.
She avoided answering the question, according to those at the session.
Councillor Wray Lamont says a team of workers from the office in Toronto is in Wiarton today, meeting with staff and council members.
He was questioned for some ywo hours at the Police station, and says they’ll be talking with everyone involved over the next few days.
Lamont says he was told he can’t talk about the investigation…
Several councillors have been called by the Ombudsman office which apparently is on the operation and proceedures of council.
Councillors were told to appear for questioning and if they don’t — they can be subpoened and fined up to 500 dollars.
That has yet to be confirmed.
In Late July — South Bruce Peninsula Council voted to censure Mayor Gwen Gilbert over her comments about possible corruption by Council.
The Mayor made the comments after a decision by Council in June to override hiring policies and appoint Annette Robson as the new financial services manager.
After her censure, Mayor Gilbert threatened legal action and the censure was rescinded in mid-August.
