Politicians in Simcoe County appear to be split on how they’ll vote on a motion for a one year moratorium on the Site 41 landfill construction.
If the motion comes to the table today — Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier says he will support a moratorium.
So will Wasaga Beach Deputy Mayor David Foster.
But Wasaga Mayor Cal Patterson says he will vote against taking a year off from construction even though he voted against building the landfill in 2008.
Collingwood Deputy Mayor Sandra Cooper says she won’t support a one year moratorium.
Cooper says she doesn’t believe in delaying a decision that needs to be made now.
Clearview’s Deputy Mayor Alicia Savage says she will also vote against any moratorium.
Clearview Mayor Ken Ferguson says he hasn’t made up his mind and will wait to hear arguments from both sides.
Simcoe Grey MPP Jim Wilson has also weighed in on the issue.
The Progressive Conservative MPP says he’s opposed not only to Site 41 — but to landfills in general.
Wilson says he supports incineration rather than landfill, and that Simcoe County ought to explore that option, along with reducing the waste that is generated.
There will be a public information session about Site 41 at 9 AM today at the Simcoe County Museum before County Council begins its meeting at its administration building at 11 AM.
