Throwing things in the garbage isn’t as simple as it used to be, and it’s about to change again in Kincardine and South Bruce.
In South Bruce, a new depot to collect electronic waste, like TV’s, stereo’s, and computers for recycling, will be set up at the Teeswater landfill.
Operations Manager Sharon Chambers says it’s known as “W.E.E.,” or waste, electronic, or electrical equipment.
South Bruce and Kincardine are also getting into a new method of collecting used tires for recycling.
They’re becoming registered collectors with the Ontario Tire Stewardship which will subsidize the collection and transport of tires left at landfill depots.
It aims to end the tire disposal fee you pay when you take a tire to the landfill, instead, you’ll pay it hidden in the price of new tires.
Chambers says used tires will be accepted at the landfill for no charge, the municipality will become a registered collector, and a registered hauler will take them away free of charge.
The new program starts September 1st and Kincardine Deputy Mayor Laura Haight says it’s a way of keeping track of new tires that are in that cycle, but the one question is if it will help curb the amount of waste tires laying around on private property.
She says individuals will be allowed to bring four tires at a time to the depot, but there’s no guidelines on what the rules are if you have more tires than that.
However, Haight says the subsidized collection and transport of old tires will help get them to recycling plants so they can be made into crumb rubber pellets or other materials.
