A memorial scholarship fund in Corporal Matt Dinning’s name will soon be a reality in Wingham.
Corporal Dinning, who grew up in Wingham, was a military policeman, who was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan in April, 2006.
Master Corporal Phil MacKinnon says the inaugural “Ride for Heroes” day is honouring Dinning with a motorcycle bike ride today from London to Wingham.
MacKinnon says over 300 riders have already registered for the event which will end at the Wingham Airport.
Wingham Police Chief Tim Poole says they expect the first of the bikers to arrive during the noon hour and a BBQ will be waiting for them.
Everyone in the area is invited to attend the ceremonies at the airport.
Poole says around 2 PM, a special ceremony will be held honouring Cpl. Dinning with family and friends.
Matt’s dad, Lincoln will speak at the event.
Because organizers are raising funds for the memorial scholarship in Dinning’s name, mementos will be on sale as well at the airport.
Master Corporal. Phil MacKinnon says their goal is to raise five thousand dollars but they hope more will come in.
The scholarship will benefit students at W. E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham, where Dinning attended.
The Ride for Heroes route starts from Area Support Unit at Wolseley Barracks in London, north on Adelaide Street to Highway 7 to Highway 23, then to Highway 86 into the Wingham Airport.
All are invited to the airport event beginning at 2 PM.
