The nightmare storm that hit Durham Thursday threw the staff of the South Bruce Grey Health Centre into emergency mode.
Public Relations offcer Brenda Lantz tells Bayshore Broadcasting News that although the Durham hospital itself wasn’t hit, the facility is operating on a backup generator due to the power outage.
Lantz says staff first heard about the storm as at rolled thru the Walkerton area just before 4 PM — and then they got a call about a possible tornado hitting the provincial campground at Durham.
Lantz says six patients were rushed to hospital — four of them from the campground but all were treated and released.
An 11 year old West Grey boy, who’s identity is not being released, died in the storm at the same campground.
Lantz praised staff members from the Durham hospital who were off for the day, and those from other hospitals in the South Bruce Grey Health Centre — who rushed in to help out, coming in from as far away as Kincardine and Walkerton.
