Police have confirmed one person has died in the town of Durham after a possible tornado touched down this afternoon.
West Grey Police tell Bayshore Broadcasting News they are waiting for the coroner before releasing more information.
But there are unconfirmed reports in the community that an 11 year old boy was killed while camping at the Durham Conservation Area.
It was one of the hardest hit areas in Durham, a town of 25 hundred people.
The municipality has declared a state of emergency and has set up a command post at the Durham town hall.
The town has also opened an emergency shelter at the Durham Legion for people who may have lost their homes.
It is located at 271 Bruce Street North and people are asked to call (519) 369-2200 beforehand.
Several buildings are damaged and trees are strewn throughout the town.
The Industrial Park was also severely damaged.
Employees raced out of a printing business — Thuro-Web — before the building collapsed.
There was also major damage to a log home manufacturer in the same industrial park.
There’s good news on the road.
Grey County Transportation has re-opened Grey Road 12 as well as Grey Road 30 in the Durham and Markdale areas.
Some roads were impassable after the storm hit at 4 PM Thursday afternoon.
The electricity is still out for about 75 hundred homes.
At the peak of the storm — about 12 thousand homes in Bruce and Grey Counties lost electricity.
Hydro One says most homes should be back by Midnight tonight — but now some homes will not have electricity until 4 PM Friday.
